Tyre compound development is dominated by one trade-off. Buyers who understand it can evaluate supplier claims realistically; buyers who do not are easily sold a number that means very little.
The three properties
- •Rolling resistance — energy lost as heat per distance travelled; drives fuel consumption and, for electric vehicles, range.
- •Wet grip — the ability to develop friction on a wet surface; drives braking distance and safety.
- •Wear resistance — how long the tread lasts.
Why they conflict
All three are governed by hysteresis — how much energy the compound dissipates when it deforms. Wet grip needs high hysteresis at low temperature and high frequency (grip on a wet micro-texture); rolling resistance needs low hysteresis at moderate temperature and frequency. Improving both at once requires separating the hysteresis response across temperature and frequency, which is exactly what silica-plus-silane tread compounds and functionalised polymers were developed to do.
What a buyer can verify
- •Ask for rolling resistance and wet grip classification or test data, not a marketing label.
- •Compare wear data from the same test method — different test tracks and vehicles produce numbers that are not comparable.
- •Ask for the compound's tan delta at both low and high temperature; the pair tells you far more than either figure alone.
Treat any claim of simultaneous improvement in all three without test data as a claim to verify, not a fact. ## Need the documents or today's price?
