Packing decisions affect unit price, freight cost, handling safety and the condition the material arrives in. They are worth specifying precisely.

Common packing formats

• •25 kg multiwall paper or woven bags on pallets, often with an inner liner — the most common format for powdered additives.
• •500 kg or 1000 kg big bags (FIBC) — lower handling cost per tonne, requires suitable discharge equipment at destination.
• •Drums or cartons for speciality grades, liquids and pastes.
• •Baled or wrapped units for rubber bales and some compound grades.

How 20'FCL loading is estimated

A 20-foot container has a payload limit and a volume limit; whichever binds first sets the loadable quantity. Powdered additives typically reach the payload limit before the volume limit, so a 20'FCL commonly carries 18–20 tonnes of bagged product depending on bag weight, pallet configuration and any regulatory payload restriction on the route. Always confirm the actual figure with the supplier for the specific packing, and note that some routes have lower road or port payload limits than the container's rated maximum.

Packing details worth specifying

• •Bag type, liner, and whether the bag is UV-stabilised for outdoor storage.
• •Pallet type, whether heat-treated to ISPM 15, and the stretch-wrap and strapping method.
• •Number of units per pallet and pallets per container.
• •Labelling language and content — grade, batch, production date, net weight, hazard markings.
• •Whether desiccant or container lining is used for moisture-sensitive grades.

Damage prevention

Most in-transit damage to bagged chemicals comes from pallet instability and from condensation.
