6PPD vs TMQ vs IPPD: Selecting an Antiozonant

Staining versus non-staining, static versus dynamic service, and the level you actually need in a tyre sidewall compound.

antiozonant6PPDTMQantidegradant

Ozone cracking is one of the most visible failure modes in rubber, and it is cheap to prevent if the antidegradant package is specified correctly at the start.

The three workhorses

  • •6PPD — the standard antiozonant for dynamic service. Strong protection against ozone and flex cracking, but it stains and discolours, so it is not used in light-coloured goods.
  • •TMQ — primarily an antioxidant with good heat resistance. Much less effective against ozone on its own, which is why it is usually paired with 6PPD rather than replacing it.
  • •IPPD — very active against ozone, including under static conditions, but it stains heavily and has more handling restrictions.

Typical package

A tyre sidewall compound commonly uses 6PPD in the 2–4 phr range together with TMQ at 1–2 phr, giving both ozone protection and heat ageing resistance.Levels below about 1.5 phr of antiozonant usually show up as visible cracking in outdoor dynamic service well before the part reaches its design life.

Regulatory note

6PPD and its transformation products are under active scientific and regulatory review in several jurisdictions. If you export to markets with evolving substance restrictions, ask your supplier for the current compliance statement for the specific grade and confirm it against the restriction list applicable in your destination market. ## Need the documents or today's price?
