Blooming in Rubber: Causes and Practical Fixes

A surface deposit on rubber is not always bloom, and treating the wrong cause wastes time. Identify what the deposit is first.

Confirm it is actually bloom

Bloom is the migration of a compounding ingredient to the surface, where it crystallises or forms a film. Typical sources: sulphur, accelerators (especially thiurams), waxes, and some antiozonants. Distinguish it from dust, mould release residue and talc by warming the surface — bloom usually disappears when heated and reappears on cooling.

Causes

  • •Ingredient above its solubility limit in the compound — the most common cause. Overdosed sulphur, thiuram or wax will migrate regardless of mixing quality.
  • •Too little filler — filler surface absorbs migrating species; very lightly loaded compounds bloom more readily.
  • •Cure state — undercured compounds have lower crosslink density and allow more migration.
  • •Storage temperature cycling — warm storage increases solubility, then cooling drives the ingredient out.
  • •Insoluble sulphur converted back to soluble form through heat exposure.

Fixes, in order

  • •Reduce the level of the blooming ingredient toward the lower end of its effective range.
  • •Check whether a slower or less-mobile grade of the same ingredient is available.
  • •Confirm cure state — bloom frequently disappears once the part is properly cured.
  • •Stabilise storage temperature.

Do not simply wipe the surface and ship. Bloom usually returns, and it interferes with bonding and printing operations downstream. ## Need the documents or today's price?
