Off-the-road tyres fail from heat and cutting far more often than from wear. Matching the tyre to the actual working condition matters more here than in any other tyre category.

The main service categories

• •Loader and dozer — high torque, high cut risk, often on rock. Deep tread, cut-resistant compound, robust casing.
• •Haulage and dump truck — high load at sustained speed on haul roads; heat build-up is the dominant failure mechanism, so heat-resistant compounds and correct TKPH rating matter.
• •Grader and industrial — lower speed, mixed surfaces; tread pattern and stability matter more than heat resistance.

What TKPH means

The tonne-kilometre-per-hour rating combines load and average speed into a heat-generation index. Exceeding it causes separation and premature failure regardless of how much tread remains. Accurate TKPH calculation needs the actual haul cycle — distance, load, speed and ambient temperature — not the nominal machine capacity.

Specification fields to state

• •Size designation and star or ply rating.
• •Whether the application is load-and-carry, haulage or grading.
• •Surface: rock, packed gravel, sand, or mixed.
• •Maximum ambient temperature and haul distance.
• •Whether the tyre will be retreaded.

Give the supplier the working condition, not just the size. An OTR tyre selected on size alone is very often a heat-management mismatch. ## Need the documents or today's price?
