Stage 1 — Mixing (compounding) The polymer, fillers, oils and curatives are blended in an internal mixer (banbury) or on a two-roll mill. The batch is discharged below about **120–140 °C** so it does not "scorch" (prematurely cure) before shaping.
Stage 2 — Forming - **Calendering:** rolls compound into sheet or coats fabric. - **Extrusion:** produces continuous profiles and hose. - **Molding / injection:** forms discrete parts in a heated mold.
Stage 3 — Vulcanization (curing) Heat and pressure cross-link the compound, typically at **140–180 °C**. Thin sheet can cure in 5–15 minutes; thick blocks may need an hour or more. Under-cured parts take a permanent set and age badly; over-cured parts lose elongation. Cross-link density is the main lever behind hardness, modulus and compression set.
Stage 4 — Finishing Cooling, trimming, deflashing, splicing and inspection before packing. Cured rubber is a thermoset — it will not melt and reflow, so trimmed scrap cannot be remelted like plastic.
