A compound is rarely just rubber A finished rubber compound is a blend: a base polymer plus a set of ingredients, each added for a specific reason.

Fillers — the volume builders - **Carbon black:** reinforces strength and abrasion resistance; the dominant filler in tires. - **Silica (precipitated):** lowers rolling resistance and heat build-up; common in "green" tires, often used with silane coupling agents. - **Calcium carbonate / clay:** low-cost extenders that reduce compound cost.

Cure system — turning gum into a solid - **Sulfur:** the classic vulcanizing agent that cross-links polymer chains. - **Accelerators:** speed up vulcanization so curing finishes in minutes, not hours. - **Activators (e.g. zinc oxide + stearic acid):** make the accelerator work efficiently. - **Peroxides:** an alternative cure system for saturated rubbers such as EPDM and silicone.

Protective and processing aids - **Antioxidants / antiozonants:** slow aging from heat and ozone. - **Plasticizers / softeners:** improve processing and low-temperature flexibility. - **Peptizers:** assist mastication of natural rubber.
