Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are one of the most frequently cited restriction issues for rubber and plastic articles, largely because they enter through common raw materials rather than being added deliberately.

Where PAHs come from

The main sources are aromatic process oils and certain carbon blacks. Historically, aromatic extender oils were standard in tyre and general rubber compounds because they process well and cost less. Restrictions on PAH content in articles have pushed the industry toward naphthenic, paraffinic and treated distillate aromatic extracts.

How the restriction is structured

Restrictions typically list a number of individual PAH compounds with an individual or combined limit, expressed in mg/kg, applying to articles that come into direct as well as prolonged or short-term repetitive contact with the skin or the mouth. Rubber and plastic components of consumer goods, sports equipment, tool handles and similar items commonly fall within scope.

How testing works

Testing is performed by extraction followed by GC-MS or equivalent, against a standardised method. Results depend on the extraction conditions, so the test method must be stated alongside the result.

Specification wording that works

• •Name the restriction and the version you are declaring against.
• •Name the test method.
• •State whether the limit applies to the listed individual compounds or to a sum.
• •State which components of the finished article must comply.

Ask the supplier whether the oil used is a restricted aromatic type, and request the PAH test report for the finished compound rather than for the oil alone — the compound is what is placed on the market. ## Need the documents or today's price?
