Bio-based rubber additives have moved from novelty to a legitimate option in several categories. Evaluating them properly means testing the property that matters rather than assuming equivalence.
Categories where renewable-content options are established
- •Plasticisers and process aids — renewable-content esters and oils used to replace part or all of aromatic or naphthenic oil.
- •Resins and tackifiers — partially bio-based tackifier systems.
- •Fillers — certain renewable or recovered carbonaceous fillers for specific applications.
- •Processing aids and dispersing agents — renewable-derived fatty acid derivatives.
What to test before switching
- •Compatibility and migration — renewable plasticisers can differ in compatibility with the base polymer; run a bloom and extraction check over several weeks, not just immediately after mixing.
- •Low-temperature behaviour — confirm brittle point or low-temperature retraction against your actual requirement.
- •Cure interaction — some renewable additives affect cure rate and scorch safety; re-measure t5 and t90.
- •Ageing — check property retention after heat ageing, not just initial properties.
How to specify
Ask for the renewable carbon content as a measured value, the property data measured on your polymer system, and the regulatory status of the substance in your destination market. Request a trial quantity with a COA before committing to a production volume.
Substitutions that succeed are usually partial at first — replacing a portion of the fossil-derived ingredient, then increasing as the data supports it. ## Need the documents or today's price?
